Opening Reception: Saturday, March 27 6-8 pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10-6 pm

Regen Projects is pleased to announce the second solo Los Angeles exhibition by British artist, Gillian Wearing. This new project entitled “Album” finds Wearing using her immediate family as the subject including pictures of her mother, brother, sister and father, uncle and herself as a teenager. However instead of having them pose for the photographs, Wearing creates self-portraits, layering their visage over her own.

Wearing uses snapshots from years past as the starting point, capturing a time of youth and innocence. Through these images Wearing delves in the complexity of human relationships within a familial structure and how they influence the individual.

Using typical modes of transformation such as makeup, styling, props and locations, Wearing inhabits each family member and her younger self both physically and psychologically. As in her earlier work, Wearing utilizes the device of the mask as a source of illumination and inspiration.

Born in Birmingham, Wearing now lives and works in London. Wearing was the 1997 recipient of the Turner Prize. Her work consists mainly of photography and video, drawing on the genre of television documentaries and borrowing from popular culture. Often Wearing's work dwells on relationships between families, lovers, and friends. She has spoken of being drawn to people who stand outside normal social boundaries. Wearing's videos and photographs concentrate on the tension between public and private realms, between individual impulses and established norms, creating a frank portrayal of contemporary British life.

Wearing's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Wearing was featured in the exhibition Intelligence: New British Art 2000 at the Tate and Wearing's work was also the subject of a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The most recent monograph on Gillian Wearing was published in 1999 by Phaidon Press.

An opening reception for Gillian Wearing will take place at the gallery on March 27 from 6-8 pm. For further information please contact Shaun Caley Regen, Lisa Overduin or Sarah Cohen at 310/276-5424.
