TOBA KHEDOORI EXHIBITION
January 18th - February 18th, 1995
Opening reception: Wednesday, January 18th, 6:00-8:00 pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00-5:00

Regen Projects is pleased to present the debut solo exhibition of Los Angeles artist Toba Khedoori. The exhibition will consist of three of Khedoori's recent large-scale, oil and wax on paper paintings.

As a departure from her earlier works, Khedoori's new paintings are less monolithic and more abstracted in their structure. The images disintegrate seamlessly into their pale background, creating a complex almost ambiguous architectonic that borders on dreamscape.
By flattening out her images, Khedoori's 10 x 20 foot field engages in the cool abstraction of the image. In the newer work, a series of windows, often rendered ghostlike on the panels of paper, suggest the bare-outline of skyscrapers; a diagonal brick train tunnel is partially rendered through the two-dimesional field; pale-blue shards and their shadows are cast throughout one painting; and a model scaffolding with stairs leading up and down on either end is crisply rendered as a mute construction.

Khedoori's sense of structure and scale struggles to reinvent a painting that is bold as it is quiet, complex as it is understated, and elegant as it is gritty. Her paintings, singular in their look and intent have a resonance that is rarely acheived. Khedoori's paintings will also be on view in the 1995 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the spring of 1995.

An opening reception for Toba Khedoori will take place on Wednesday, January 18th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. For further information or questions please contact Stuart Regen or Shaun Caley at the gallery.
