ELIZABETH PEYTON: New Paintings
October 28 - December 3, 1999
Gallery hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 11 - 5 pm
Opening reception: Thursday, October 28, 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Regen Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by New York artist Elizabeth Peyton. This exhibition will feature Peyton's most recent portraits of friends as well as celebrities. In his catalogue essay for Elizabeth Peyton: Live Forever, David Rimanelli discusses the subjects of Peyton's lush images, her mingling of pop cultural personas with inspiring figures from the artist's private life. Rimalleli writes,

Elizabeth Peyton's work ...strives to resist the irony that attends all art that derives from the mass media, whether that irony inheres in the conception or the reception of the work, and typically in both. When Peyton paints Kurt Cobain, or Liam and Noel Gallagher, or John Lydon, there is no getting away from the art historical precedent which authorizes these people as legitimate subjects for portraiture. The obvious precursor is Andy Warhol...Many of Peyton's subjects belong to the realm of her own personal history: friends and fellow artists, her own dealer. Not famous, at least not yet. Their proximity to images drawn from the archive of Pop celebrity further expands and deforms the notion of fan worship. Rendered in Peyton's lacquered, sensuously drippy manner, these more anonymous avatars of style and charisma are no less glamorous--and no less touching--than her grade A stars. Put one way, this could be interpreted (symptomatically) as yet another variation on the most famous Warholian apothegm: In the future, etc. The difference is that in Peyton's frankly romantic universe that fifteen minutes is perpetual."

Peyton's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally. A reception for Elizabeth Peyton will be held on Thursday, October 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
